Mermaids
A mermaid is a mythical aquatic creature that has the head and body of a human and the lower body of a fish. Almost every culture on our planet has a myth about mermaids. Around the world, mermaids are known by many names, including Havmand in Scandinavia, Nixe in Germany, Rusalka in Russia, Mami Wata in Africa, and Ningyo in Japan. Getting Their Feet WetOne of the first mermaid-like creatures comes from Mesopotamian mythology, stories told more than 5,000 years ago. The Syrian god Atargatis was a beautiful half-woman, half-fish entity worshipped more than 3,000 years ago. The Greek god Triton was a fish from the waist down. In Chinese mythology, the tears of mermaids become pearls.
The "Feejee Mermaid" was a fake mermaid corpse that caused a mermaid craze when it was displayed in London. during the 1800's. It later stunned audiences in the United Stated when it was exhibited at the Barnum and Bailey circus.
The modern version of mermaids as beautiful half-woman half-fish creatures was popularized by Han Christian Anderson's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid," published in 1857.
Mermaids in most folklore are not nice creatures, aften portrayed as lurimg sailors to their doom or causing violent storms.
Mermaids and sirens are often viewed as similar creatures, but sirens are usually portrayed as much more aggressive and dangerous tan mermaids.
In Greek mythology, Sirens had the upper body of a young woman and the lower body of a bird. The Romans later adopted the Greek siren mythology, but portrayed sirens as women with fish tails.
